Student Writing Handbook Fifth+Edition

(Marvins-Underground-K-12) #1

Because you must use these methods to develop anything you write, consult this
section frequently. And keep in mind that any one piece of writing may use several
methods of development. For instance, a piece that explains how to use a lathe to
turn a table leg will be developed primarily by process analysis. However, the piece
may also include any or all of the following:

• Definition: What is a lathe?
• Description: What does a turned leg look like?
• Comparison and contrast: How is it different from any other table leg?
• Cause and effect: What happens if you don’t use the lathe properly?
• Opinion: Is there a certain wood that is better for the project than another
kind?

Use this section to find models for every kind of development method you’re likely
to use, no matter what you must write. Study the analyses that follow each model
for clues about what works and why. Then apply what you learn to the more than 40
kinds of writing explained and illustrated in Part III.

Note that additional models and their respective analyses can be found online.
