Student Writing Handbook Fifth+Edition

(Marvins-Underground-K-12) #1
Cause and Effect / 65

-^ Each paragraph examines one cause for their coming: lumbering, fishing, and
mining.
-^ Each paragraph includes ample supporting details to develop the main ideas.
-^ The paragraphs are arranged by order of importance, from least to most
important.
-^ Effective transitions help readers follow the organization and recognize the
order of importance.
-^ The intent of the analysis is to describe why people have come to the island
over the centuries. Following logically, however, are other cause-and-effect
relationships.

Note that in discussing the three industries on Isle Royale, the writer suggests other
causal relationships suitable for further analysis and leaves certain questions unan-
swered. Still, she has written what she set out to write. On the other hand, these
remaining questions show how complicated most cause-and-effect relationships
really are. Be prepared to find such open-ended situations when you try to analyze a
complicated subject.
