PROCESS

The following steps can help you plan, organize, develop, and revise your classifica-
tion paper.

STEP 1: Prewriting—Choosing a Topic

If you must select your own topic, begin by brainstorming, possibly with a fellow
student, listing topics you have studied recently. [See Chapter 1, Prewriting.] Try com-
pleting the following statement:

Recently, we have studied different kinds of _________.

Whatever words fit in the blank may be suitable topics for your classification paper.
You may have completed the statement above with words such as these:

business letters
computer keyboards
lettering styles
watercolor methods
advertising
leavening agents
poetry
pest control
production means
points of view
recession
taxes

These topics may suggest others as you brainstorm your own class situation.

STEP 2: Prewriting—Choosing a Means of Division

With a topic in mind, or one assigned, you are ready to decide on possible divi-
sions. First, decide the means by which you will divide the subject. Consider these
examples:

-^ business letters divided according to purpose
-^ computer keyboards divided according to ease of use
