All deal with the same general topic: Mammoth Cave National Park. Note that the
five sample classification papers include single-paragraph papers and three-, four-,
and six-paragraph themes. The samples illustrate both order of importance and

The nature of scientific study suggests the importance of classification in a science
class. Scientists regularly sort, show relationships, and classify.


Animals in Mammoth Cave


In Mammoth Cave, biologists have identified nearly 150 animal species, but only about 30 can
be considered common. These cave-dwelling animals fall into 2 groups: Part-time cave dwell-
ers, called trogloxenes, who move freely from inside to outside, and permanent cave dwellers,
which include both troglophiles and troglobites.
The trogloxenes depend less on sight than do other animals and thus can find their way in and
out of the cave in the dark. They rely on the cool, constant temperatures and the high humid-
ity for protection either in winter or summer. These animals, all of which feed outside the cave,
include raccoons, pack rats, cave crickets, and bats. Animals such as raccoons spend only
