2.6. Solving Rational Equations http://www.ck12.org

A follow up question would be to ask whether or not ohms can be negative which is beyond the scope of this
text.

3.x+x^2 −x+^32 =x (^2) +^62 x
(x+ 2 )(x+ 2 )− 3 x= 6
x^2 + 4 x+ 4 − 3 x− 6 = 0
x^2 +x− 2 = 0
(x+ 2 )(x− 1 ) = 0
x=− 2 , 1
Note that -2 is an extraneous solution.
Practice
Solve the following rational equations. Identify any extraneous solutions.

1.^2 x−x^4 =^16 x
2. x+^41 −x+x 1 = 2
3. x+^53 +x−^23 = 1
4. x−^34 −x+^54 = 6
5. x+x 1 −x+^62 = 4
6. x−x 4 −x−^44 = 8
7. x^4 −x 2 + 3 = 1
8. x−+^21 x+ 6 =−x
9. x+^12 + 1 =− 2 x
10. −x^6 +x− 13 − 3 =− 4 x

  1. x+x^3 −x+^33 =x (^2) +^63 x

  2. x−x^4 −x−^24 =x (^2) −^84 x

  3. x+x^6 −x+^26 =x (^212) + 6 x

  4. x+x^5 −x+^35 =x (^215) + 5 x

  5. Explain what it means for a solution to be extraneous.
