country every day

Lucky spike
What if you could hibernate through the winter until spring, when the PM says a vaccine
will be bringing us closer to normality? If you were a hedgehog, you could – and you’d
have luxurious digs to hibernate in thanks to Parkdean Resorts.
Concerned by research showing that 98 per cent of the UK’s hedgehog population
has been lost in the last 68 years and warnings that they could be extinct within
two years, the holiday company created the world’s fi rst caravan park for them. The
miniature resort boasts four hedgehog-sized caravans, decking (“to enjoy the sunset”),
double-glazed windows, French doors and quaint bunting – not forgetting the “tight-
knit community” with the “neighbour hedgehogs next door”.
It’s hoped the adorable project, which started in the Lake District before growing
across the country, will inspire people to do their bit to protect the animals from attack
by predators, being exposed to the elements and choosing dangerous places like
bonfi res to hibernate.

Brand awareness
Marcus Rashford’s tireless campaigning to
end child food poverty has inspired plenty of
Brits to take the matter seriously – and Russell
Brand is the latest to answer Rashford’s call
to volunteer at his local foodbank. The actor
and comic revealed he would be offering his
services to One Can Trust in High Wycombe in a
social media video as he urged his followers to
join him in supporting the cause.
He said: “I’m trying to support One
Can Trust in any way I can. I try not to get
caught up when I’m involved in things like this.
My mind goes a little crazy, I start wondering
well, God, can’t people do more? Can’t
supermarkets do more?
“In the end if you think about stuff like this
and if you think about poverty, it’s impossible
to avoid the idea that we should completely
restructure society. But for now let’s function
on the rather more manageable objective of
helping people that really need to get fed.”
