Talent, enthusiasm and a willingness

to share the technical and creative

ideas behind his pictures has earned

Tommy Reynolds global clients and

over 47k subscribers to his YouTube

channel, as Tracy Calder explains

A

few weeks ago, I watched a behind-the-scenes video
of Tommy Reynolds taking his shoes and socks off,
wading into a lake and photographing a young woman
(Macie) on a fl oating bed. Tommy was working on a
personal project and entered the chilly water to secure a shot
of Macie appearing to wake from a dream, only to fi nd herself
still in it. Mission accomplished, the photographer hauled
himself out of the depths, jeans clinging to his legs, and turned
to help his assistant out of the water. The pictures of Macie are
beautiful: Tommy’s use of off-camera fl ash is fi rst-rate, the level of
storytelling in his pictures is remarkable and, crucially, everyone
on the shoot appears to be having a fantastic time. Macie seems
completely at ease, as though fl oating on an air bed is all part
of her daily routine. Tommy clearly knows how to get the best
out of his team, and this involves a certain amount of mucking
around. ‘If I look silly, then people let their guard down a bit,’
he suggests. ‘I have no problem looking like a fool. I’m quite
animated as well, which probably helps!’

Canon EF
100mm f/2.8L
Macro IS USM
Providing shallow depth of
field and beautiful bokeh,
this lens is great for tight
headshots. It also has
built-in hybrid image
stabilisation, making it
suitable for handholding.

Hasselblad
500 C/M
Teamed with an 80mm
f/2.8 lens, this medium-
format classic allows
Tommy to indulge in his
love for film. Back in the
day, the 500s series was
loved by studio and
wedding photographers.
