music had a somewhat
emptier sound than the
richness of vinyl records.
The OED describes
‘analogue’ as ‘relating to
or using signals or
information represented
by a continuously variable
physical quantity’. This
would apply equally as
well to an image produced
from a lm-based camera
as a vinyl record. Whereas
a digital image is made of
discrete packages of
information: pixels. So the
term analogue is very
appropriate to non-digital
cameras and the images
resulting from them.
It is nice to see that the
English obsession with
pedantry is not dead and
that I have been able to
contribute to its
continuation.

Escapism
I nd in these challenging
times that photography is
a great form of escapism
for me, and helps with
mental health. It’s great
having a weekly magazine
to draw inspiration from.
I especially take note of
lens choice and camera
settings to help me
learn. Here is my picture
(below) of Tyne Pedestrian
Tunnel that only reopened
last year after a complete
refurbishment.

YOUR LETTERS

Am I missing
something?
Thank you for the recent
in-depth on the new Sony
A7R IV (AP 3 October). As
I primarily shoot nature
photography and am
looking at the possibility
of upgrading to mirrorless,
I was interested to read
that the ‘wildlife
photographer can bene t
from the 26.2MP APS-C
crop mode to add extra
reach to lenses’. My
question is this: Could
I not take a photograph
using the 61MP full-frame
setting and just crop the
photo later in Lightroom?
Surely the end result
would be the same, or am
I missing something
obvious?
John Howell

Yes you’re right, cropping
a 61MP full-frame shot to
26.2MP later will give
exactly the same result as
shooting in APS-C mode.
The main advantages are
operational: you can see
the subject larger in the
view nder, making it
easier to observe what
they’re doing, and shooting
bursts at 26.2MP will eat
into your memory card
space far less quickly.

Pedantry
I noted Gerry Burrows’s
letter relating to the use
of ‘analogue’ in relation to
cameras that are not
digital. It is true that prior
to the digital revolution
there was no need for any
devices to be referred to
as analogue, in particular
cameras. However, times

have moved on and there
is a distinct difference
between digital devices
and analogue, which
became very apparent to
keen followers of music
with the introduction of
CDs. Digital equipment
works with discrete
packets of information
and it was noticed that CD
