8-8Yakushi triad, kondo, Yakushiji, Nara Prefecture, Japan, Nara period, late seventh or early eighth century. Bronze, central figure
8 4 high, including base and mandorla.
The sculptor of this Nara Buddha triad favored greater anatomical definition and shape-revealing drapery than the Asuka artist
Tori Busshi (FIG. 8-7). The Nara statues display the sensuous fleshiness of Indian sculpture.
8-9Kondo (above) and aerial view of the temple complex (right),
Horyuji, Nara Prefecture, Japan, Nara period, ca. 680.
The kondo, or Golden Hall, of a Buddhist temple complex housed
statues of the Buddha and bodhisattvas. The Horyuji kondo follows
Chinese models in its construction method and its curved roofline.
