By Zach BraZiller

This was a gift. Two missed free
throws. An opening was created.
Now St. John’s could cut what
had just been a 10-point deficit to
two or even one.
A game in which it had
been thoroughly out-
played across 40 minutes
was now within reach.
Except, the Johnnies couldn’t exe-
cute one of basketball’s simple
plays. They were unable to corral
the carom off a missed free throw.
Gideon George was quicker than
Julian Champagnie to the ball, en-
capsulating the evening for the
Red Storm. He sank one of two free
throws with 41 seconds left. St.
John’s wouldn’t score again in a
frustrating 74-68 loss to more ex-
perienced and far sharper BYU at
the Mohegan Sun bubble Wednes-
day night in Uncasville, Conn.
“We have to get that rebound and
make a play at the other end,”
coach Mike Anderson said via

Zoom afterward.
Anderson called it “maturity ver-
sus immaturity,” the older Cougars
getting the better of the younger
Johnnies. Two nights after a thrill-
ing four-point win over Boston
College, a game in which
St. John’s showcased its
relentless end-to-end
style and impressive
young talent, there was a
lack of purpose. Its pressure de-
fense barely made BYU sweat. Ball
movement was lacking. The John-
nies failed to set tempo, allowing it
to be a half-court game that fa-
vored their opponent.
“What was missing was us using
our heads, to be honest,” Cham-
pagnie said. “We just didn’t come
out and execute the way we’re sup-
posed to. We looked disjointed.
“I feel like what we were missing
was us being together.”
Only Champagnie was a consist-
ent factor offensively, scoring 25
points, while the Johnnies made
just 4 of 21 3-point attempts, were

unable to impose their style and
just couldn’t piece together nearly
enough quality stretches. Part of it
was being unable to get out in tran-
sition enough. Some of that was
due to questionable shot selection.
Nine of St. John’s first 18 shots
were 3-point attempts early in the
shot clock.
“I thought we should have at-
tacked more,” Anderson said. “I
thought we settled. Sometimes,
they’re leaving you open for a rea-
son. I didn’t think we had the pa-
tience [we needed].”
Posh Alexander, the freshman
point guard who has been so im-
pressive early on, managed just four
points on 2 of 7 shooting, though he
did have seven assists and six re-
bounds. Isaih Moore had 11 points,
but needed 11 shots, and Greg Willi-
ams Jr. added 10 points along with
four steals. Vince Cole was limited
to four points. As a team, St. John’s
shot just 36.7 percent from the field
if you take away Champagnie’s 10 of
20 performance.

BYU, meanwhile, made 10
3-pointers a day after struggling
mightily in a loss to USC. It used
the Red Storm’s aggressiveness
against them, creating open shots
to slow whatever momentum the
team from Queens had. Alex Bar-
cello, a thorn in the Johnnies’ side,
scored 20 points on 8 of 11 shooting.
Following a shaky first half in
which it trailed by six, St. John’s
played with more of a purpose
coming out of the break. It pushed
the pace, picked up full court and
moved the ball better. It pulled
even at 43 when Champagnie
scored inside.

But a drought that lasted 3:02 fol-
lowed and BYU pushed the lead
back to five. With 7:17 left, Willi-
ams scored on a drive to get St.
John’s back within two again.
However, BYU punched back, like
it had the entire game, scoring the
next seven points. St. John’s did have
one last run, getting within four
with 44.6 seconds left after a 6-0
run. But then came two missed free
throws by Brandon Averette and the
offensive rebound by George.
“We had some adversity,” Ander-
son said, “and I just didn’t think we
responded the right way.”
