Divide the grid
into square or
rectangular
blocks, each
containing one
digit only. Every
block must
contain the
number of cells
indicated by the
digit inside it.

Enter each of
the numbers
from 1 to 9 in
the grid, so that
the six sums
work. We’ve
placed two
numbers to get
you started.
Each sum
should be
calculated left
to right or top
to bottom.

From these letters, make words of
four or more letters, always including
the central letter. Answers must be in
the Concise Oxford Dictionary, excluding
capitalised words, plurals, conjugated
verbs (past tense etc), adverbs ending
in LY, comparatives and superlatives.
How you rate 13 words, average;
18, good; 24, very good; 30, excellent

As with standard Sudoku, fill the grid so that every column,
every row and every 3x3 box contains the digits 1 to 9. Each set
of cells joined by dotted lines must add up to the target number
in its top-left corner. Within each set of cells joined by dotted
lines, a digit cannot be repeated.

There were fun and games on this
deal from a Tuesday afternoon
duplicate at ARBC (back when live

y

bridge was played).
The best E-W score came at
Table One, care of greed from
North defending 6 ♠. Declarer,
East, ruffed South’s ace of dia-
monds lead in dummy, crossed to a
spade and led the eight of hearts to
the queen (cleverly hiding his jack).
North won the king and would
have been well advised to cash the
ace of clubs. However, he hoped to
score both his ♣AQ over dummy’s
king. Declarer ruffed his diamond
return, crossed to the jack of
hearts, ruffed a diamond, and shed
his two clubs on dummy’s♥AQ.
Small slam made.
Kiril Delev secured the N-S top
at Table Two — with a courageous
5 ♦bid at adverse vulnerability.
West cashed the ace of spades and
found the great switch to the
queen of hearts. Declarer won
dummy’s king, crossed to the ace
of diamonds (West discarding), led

y g

the ten of clubs to the queen, led a
second diamond to the jack,
cashed the king (felling East’s
queen) and ran all his diamonds.

On the last diamond, We st,
unable to let go a club (promoting
dummy’s ♣A9), elected to throw

the ten of hearts. No good —
declarer discarded dummy’s nine of
clubs and led a heart. West won the
ace and led a club, dummy’s ace and
promoted heart winning the last
two tricks. Doubled game made.
To defeat the game in the ending,
West must discard the ace of
hearts, hoping his partner holds
the jack (with his winning spades).
