historic first French-

This French series has
been a hit in its home
country, and is billed
as “part Mad Men,
part Agatha Christie”,
being about both the
ambitious Christine
Beauval — who breaks
the glass ceiling as a TV
anchor in 1962 Paris —
and a tragic chain of
events. When Christine

still a dynamo of raw
energy and physicality.
The second half has
anecdotes from his hit
films Animal House
and The Blues Brothers,
between insights into
Belushi’s troubled
state of mind. Belushi
was a star destined to
be that tragic cliché:
the comedy genius
who falls victim to his
unbridled artistic
temperament.

in Hollywood, where in
1982 he died of a drug
overdose aged 33. “I’d
rather be an anarchist
than a professional,”
Belushi explains. “I like
to shake things up.”
Watching him in his
Saturday Night Live
pomp in the 1970s —
(mock) punching
Chevy Chase off stage
or doing his larger-
than-life impersonation
of Joe Cocker — he’s

feature-length profile
avoids such pitfalls by
allowing the comedian’s
family (including his
wife Judith) and peers
(Dan Aykroyd, Chevy
Chase, Gilda Radner,
Harold Ramis among
them) to do the talking.
These audio clips tell
the story over footage,
animation and rare
photos of Belushi from
his early years in 1960s
Illinois to his last days

famously pilloried by
all those who knew
Belushi for having the
temerity to focus on
his bad behaviour,
mainly a prodigious
drug habit. Yet the
criticism levelled at
the sensationalist book
was nothing to that
thrown at its 1989 film
adaptation. It seems
you don’t meddle with
the image of this pop-
culture icon. This
