Pennsylvania, Lee's infantry achieved
notable success at Winchester, Virginia, on
14-15 June. Ewell's energy and success there


prompted Southerners to hope that he would
emerge as a sort of reincarnation of
Stonewall Jackson. On through Maryland
and deep into Pennsylvania the Confederate
columns pressed. Some of them reached
Carlisle and York and the outskirts of the
