Portrait of Joseph E Johnston. A graduate of West Point, Johnston was a classmate
of Robert E Lee. He lost favor with Jefferson Davis after the fall of Vicksburg and
was relieved of his command in 1864, only to be restored in 1865. On 26 April
1865, he surrendered his army to General Sherman.
