of historical evidence

Answer the following prompt using the three documents above and your knowledge of the
time period between 1787 and 1797. Consult your textbook and class notes to help you
answer the question.

The three documents above (Docs. 6.8, 6.9, and 6.10) exhibit examples of Ameri-
can gender, political, and economic identities in the ten years after the election of
George Washington as first president of the United States. Analyze how the value
systems in each document reflected an emerging national identity.

Your response should include an introductory paragraph with a thesis and at least two
body paragraphs, each of which must include a claim and evidence. (See Building AP®
Writing Skills, p. 25, for examples of claims and evidence.) Be sure to decide which organiza-
tional format will be better for your response—subject-by-subject (see Building AP® Writing
Skills, p. 51) or point-by-point (see Building AP® Writing Skills, p. 81).
When writing about a national identity, combine those factors that influenced the cre-
ation of that identity. For example, in the previous Applying AP® Historical Thinking Skills
exercise, you examined the legislation that developed during this time period. This exercise
asks you to combine (or synthesize) the gender, political, and economic issues that also con-
tributed to this national identity.
