Harriet Beecher Stowe—favors forgiveness and brotherhood

Mary Henderson Eastman—favors traditional boundaries of ownership

James E. Taylor—suggests moral indignation at the cost of war

Emily Dickinson—implies that slavery is a condition of madness

Given the different messages of these examples, the discussion of morality is in-
fluenced by your recognition of the outlier status of any of the examples.

A beacon or inspiration: You could write, for example, that Emily Dickinson
(Doc. 11.11) was one of the first to incorporate a transcendental philosophy into
the slavery debate, as in these lines:
Assent, and you are sane;
Demur, — you’re straightway dangerous,
And handled with a chain.

A portal for new ideas: Alternatively, you could write that James E. Taylor
(Doc. 11.10) made the moral debate an economic one, thereby broadening
the discussion about morality.

A recognition of another side: Or you could instead write that Mary Henderson
Eastman’s (Doc. 11.3) moral view was based on a traditional mind-set that grad-
ually lessened with new ways of thinking about slavery and morality.

In your notebook, identify and organize your evidence for the economic aspects
of the debate.

steP 4 Outline your response

Use the following outline as a basis for your essay. Note the position of the quali-
fier as a way to enhance your body paragraphs. The qualifying example may serve
as a transition to a new segment of your essay, a counterargument, or an extreme
example of all the evidence that you have provided for that portion of the essay.
