Under Executive Order 9066 (1942), more than 110,000 Japanese Americans were relo-
cated and interred throughout the United States for the duration of the Second World
War. This photo by Russell Lee (1903–1986) shows a young child being evacuated to the
internment camp in Owens Valley, California.

During World War II, “Rosie the Riveter” encouraged women to commit to the industrial
workforce to replace male workers who had been recruited or drafted into the armed
services.
