This prompt invites a study of persona, given that its use of the words “unity” and
“diversity” encourage you to analyze the different personas that are presented in
the civil rights documents. This prompt also invites a comparison between unity
and diversity, so a prospective outline may feature the following:

I. Introduction


II. Voices of unity: More than just listing documents here—such as Reagan’s
speech—consider the broad contexts or themes that contribute to the
national sense of unity.

III. Voices of diversity: How you define unity and diversity requires you to
examine historical context.

IV. Evaluation: Beyond analyzing the persona, the evaluation allows you to
make an informed judgment. In ending a comparison, one conclusion
to draw would be hierarchical: which voices prevailed during this era?
Another conclusion to draw would be comparative: what similarities
and differences can be found in the overall effect of these voices?
