Sit-ins
The Greensboro demonstration that set off the movement’s sit-in phase is
covered by Miles Wolff, Lunch at the 5 & 10(1970), and William Chafe,
Civilities and Civil Rights(1980). David Halberstam, The Children(1998),
has written a sympathetic account of the Nashville students he covered as a
reporter.

Freedom Ride
In Lay Bare the Heart(1985), James Farmer writes movingly about the
Freedom Ride he organized. James Peck, Freedom Ride(1962), is a memoir
of a white rider. Dorothy Kaufman, The First Freedom Ride (1989),
describes the brutality suffered by Walter Bergman. Attorney William
Kunstler, Deep in My Heart(1966), relates his defense of the riders, the first
of many such courtroom battles.

Battle of Ole Miss
James Meredith, Three Years in Mississippi(1966), tells of his daunting
quest to desegregate the University of Mississippi. Two university professors
recount the trouble over Meredith’s admission: James Silver, Mississippi: The
Closed Society(1964), and Russell Barrett, Integration at Ole Miss(1965).
Erle Johnston, I Rolled with Ross(1980), defends the governor who blocked
Meredith. Constance Baker Motley, Equal Justice Under Law(1998), reveals
the career of an NAACP attorney and the first black woman appointed to
the federal bench. William Doyle, An American Insurrection(2001), is a
sprightly narrative of the bloodshed at Ole Miss. Nadine Cohodas, The Band
Played Dixie(1997), places the traumatic event within the long-range his-
tory of the university. Paul Hendrickson, Sons of Mississippi(2003), looks at
how racism infected Mississippi lawmen and their progeny.

Albany
There is no book-length treatment of the Albany Movement, though this
episode is treated in several surveys, including Howard Zinn, The Southern
Mystique(1964).

Bombingham
William Nunnelley,Bull Connor(1991), and Andrew Manis,A Fire You Can’t
Put Out: The Civil Rights Life of Birmingham’s Reverend Fred Shuttleworth
