Rate is a concept related to averages. Cars travel at an average speed. Work gets done at an average rate.
Because the ideas are similar, you can also use a pie to organize your information on rate questions.
Here’s a simple example:
Problem: If a fisherman can tie 9 flies for fly fishing in an hour and a half, how long does it take him to tie
one fly, in minutes?
Solution: First, convert the hour and a half to 90 minutes, so your units are consistent. Then fill in the top
of the pie with the amount (9 flies) and the lower right part with the time (90 minutes).
Divide 9 by 90 to get the rate, , or one fly every 10 minutes.
