60 . F The simplest thing to do is to start by determining which values the problem is describing.

Since it wants the numbers that are 4 units from −1, only two points satisfy that: −5 and 3. If

you’re having trouble thinking about that, simply draw a number line and count it out.

If the answer choices describe the solution set of −5 and 3, then you can test these values in

each of the answer choices to eliminate ones that don’t work. In (F), |3 + 1| = 4, and |−5 + 1| =

4, and |−5 + 1| = 4. Both values work, so this will be your answer. In (G), |3 − 1| ≠ 4, so

eliminate that. In (H), |3 + 4| ≠ 1, so eliminate that. In (J), |−5 −4| ≠1, so eliminate that, too. In

(K), |3 + 4| ≠ 1, so eliminate that.
