A Short History of the Middle Ages Fourth Edition

(Marvins-Underground-K-12) #1

Plate 3.1: The Empress Eudocia and Her Sons, Homilies of Gregory Nazianzus (c.880). After the end of
iconoclasm in 843, two distinct, but complementary, artistic styles flourished at Byzantium, easily seen by
comparing this plate to Plate 3.2. The frontal, formal, hierarchical, and decorative style represented by this
illumination harks back to late imperial work, such as the Hippodrome obelisk base in Plate 1.8 on p. 18 and
the image of Justinian flanked by officials of church and state in Plate 1.12 on pp. 32–33.
