by a lord, or Halach Uinic,who resided in the political center and oversaw secondary

officials knowns as Batab.Other less-centralized polities lacked the Halach Uinicof-

fice, and the Batabofficial was the highest authority. Interior, less populous, and

loosely organized zones were not governed by a Batab.There is some evidence of a

hierarchical relationship between polities, as the lord of Acalan (in the interior of

Campeche) extracted tribute from the polity of Chetumal (southern Quintana

Roo/Belize coast) following a military expedition.

In addition to political rulers, other specialized offices included: Holpop(mat of-

ficial with festivity/administrative duties); Kaluac(supplier who procured resources

for overlords); Nacom(war leader); Ah Kin(high priest); Ah Kanob(speaker); and

Ppolom yok(merchant). Commoners had various occupations as craftspeople, farm-

ers, free laborers, and slaves. Another class of secondary officials, the Ah Kuleland the
