HE WORLD PHOTOGRAPHY Organisation has announced the
overall winners in the 2019 Sony World Photography Awards,
which this year drew in a record-breaking 326,997 submissions
from 195 countries. The London ceremony saw ten category
winners in the Professional competition announced, along with
second and third placed finalists, as well as overall winners in the
Open, Youth and Student competitions. Italian Federico Borella was
named Photographer of the Year, scooping the top prize of $25,
and Sony digital kit, for his series 'Five Degrees', which focuses on male
suicide in Tamil Nadu, India, which is facing its worst drought in 140
years. Based on a Berkeley University study, which found a correlation
between climate change and increased suicide rates amongst Indian
farmers, Borella explored the impact of climate change on this
agricultural region and its community through a powerful mixture of
images depicting the farming landscape, mementos of the deceased
farmers, and portraits of those left behind. British photographers fared
well, with four making the top three in their respective categories,
including Yan Wang Preston winning the Landscape category for the
series 'To the South of the Colourful Clouds'. All winners received Sony
camera gear, publication in the winners’ book and their work shown as
