Oneofthemostcommonusesofnounclausesinacademicwritingis toreportwhat
someoneelsehassaidorwritten.Thiskindofnounclauseis calledreportedspeech,
indirectspeech,orindirectquotation.Verbtensesinreportedspeechfollowspecial
rules.


  • Ifthemainclauseverbis simplepresent,presentperfect,orfuture,theverb
    inthenounclauseis inthetensethatexpressesthemeaningthatthemain
    clauseintends.
