The use of the words ‘sharp’ and ‘flat’
When comparing the major and minor scale structures, calling the lowered
third, sixth, and seventh scale degrees ‘flat three’, ‘flat six’, and ‘flat
seven’ is technically incorrect. In everyday language, however, it is very
common to use the terms ‘flat’ and ‘sharp’ to mean the same thing as
‘lowered’ and ‘raised’. This usage is acceptable so long as it is understood
that, depending on the key signature, lowering a note does not always
involve the use of a flat and raising a note does not always involve the use
of a sharp, as these changes may also be accomplished with natural signs.
