Passive Voice

Passive voice is used when the focus is on the action. It is not important,
or not known, who or what is performing the action.
Example: We place the sharp and flat signs before the note. (active)
The sharp and flat signs are placed before the note. (passive)


General form: Subject + a finite form of be + Past Participle


Tense Subject Verb Object

Simple Present


Active: He Writes the song.
Passive: The song is written by him.

Simple Past


Active: He Wrote the song.
Passive: The song was written by him.

Future


Active: He will write^ the song.
Passive: The song will be written by him.

Present
Progressive


Active: He is writing the song.
Passive: The song is being written by him.

Past Progressive


Active: He was writing the song.
Passive: The song was being written by him.

Present Perfect


Active: He has written the song.
Passive: The song has been written by him.

Past Perfect


Active: He had written the song.
Passive: The song had been written by him.
