àihù 爱护 [comp: 爱 love + 护 protect] V care for and protect, cherish ■ 父母都爱护自己的孩 子。
Fùmǔ dōu àihù zìjǐ de háizi. All parents care for and protect their children. ■ 我们应该爱护我 们
之间的友谊。Wǒmen yīnggāi àihù wǒmen zhī jiān de yǒuyì. We should cherish our friendship.
àiqíng 爱情 [comp: 爱 love + 情 feeling, affection] N romantic love ■ 年轻人都希望获得爱 情。
Niánqīngrén dōu xīwàng huòdé àiqíng. Young people all yearn for love. ■ 婚姻一定要建立在爱
情的基础上。Hūnyīn yídìng yào jiànlì zài àiqíng de jīchǔ shang. Marriage must be based on love.
àirén 爱人 [modif: 爱 love + 人 person] N husband or wife ■ 我和爱人结婚十年了。Wǒ hé àirén
jiéhūn shí nián le. My husband (or wife) and I have been married for ten years.


NOTE: 爱人 àirén as husband or wife is     only    used    in  Mainland    China   as  a   colloquialism.  On  formal
occasions 丈夫 zhàngfu (husband) and 妻子 qīzi (wife) are used instead. Now there is a decreasing
tendency to use 爱人 àirén in China. In its place 先生 xiānsheng and 太太 tàitai are used to refer to husband
and wife, a long established practice in Taiwan, Hong Kong and overseas Chinese communities. For
example: ■ 你先生近来忙吗?Nǐ xiānsheng jìnlái máng ma? Is your husband busy these days? ■ 我太太要我下班
回家的路上买些菜。Wǒ tàitai yào wǒ xiàbān huíjiā de lù shang mǎi xiē cài. My wife wants me to buy some
vegetables on my way home after work.

ānjìng 安静 [comp: 安 peace + 静 quiet] ADJ quiet, peaceful, serene ■ 这里很少有车开 过,环境很安
静。Zhèli hěn shǎo yǒu chē kāiguò, huánjìng hěn ānjìng. There is very little traffic here. The
environment is very peaceful. ■ 请 大家安静!Qǐng dàjiā ānjìng! Please be quiet, everyone! ■ 这
位老人只想过安静的生活。Zhè wèi lǎorén zhǐ xiǎng guò ānjìng de shēnghuó. This old man only
wants to live a quiet life.

ānníng 安宁 [comp: 安 peace + 宁 peaceful] ADJ calm, composed
ānpái 安排 [comp: 安 to settle, to arrange + 排 to arrange, to put in order] V arrange, make arrangements;
plan ■ 大学生一般都很忙,因此必 须安排好时间。Dàxuéshēng yìbān dōu hěn máng, yīncǐ
bìxū ānpái hǎo shíjiān. University students are generally busy people, so they must plan their time
well. ■ 董事长下个月去中国旅行,请你安 排一下。Dǒngshìzhǎng xià ge yuè qù Zhōngguó
lǚxíng, qǐng nǐ ānpái yíxià. The chairman of the board is going to China for a trip next month.
Please make the arrangements.
ānquán 安全 [comp: 安 peace + 全 complete, all-around] I N security, safety ■ 开车安全第一。 Kāichē
ānquán dì yī. When you are driving, safety is the most important thing. II ADJ safe, secure ■ 在这里
夜里一个人在街上走,安全吗?Zài zhèli yèli yí ge rén zài jiē shang zǒu, ānquán ma? Is it safe
to walk alone in the streets here at night?
ānwèi 安慰 [comp: 安 make peace + 慰 comfort] V comfort, console ■ 他们失去了心爱的女儿,心 情
悲痛,朋友们都来安慰他们。Tāmen shīqùle xīn’ài de nǚ’ér, xīnqíng bēitòng, péngyoumen dōu
lái ānwèi tāmen. They are in deep sorrow as they have lost their beloved daughter. Their friends
have all come to comfort them.
ānxiáng 安详 [comp: 安 peace + 详 calm] ADJ (of facial expression) serene, composed
ānxīn 安心 [v+obj: 安 make peace + 心 the heart] ADJ relaxed and content ■ 她不安心在小学教 书,她
想当电影演员。Tā bù ānxīn zài xiǎoxué jiāoshū, tā xiǎng dāng diànyǐng yǎnyuán. She is not
content to be a primary school teacher; she wants to be a movie star.
