wǒmen de xuéxiào. Walk straight towards the east and you’ll come to our school. ■ 我在体育 馆
东门等你。Wǒ zài tǐyùguǎn dōng mén děng nǐ. I’ll be waiting for you at the east gate of the
gymnasium.
dōngbēi 东北 [comp: 东 east + 北 north] N northeast, the Northeast ■ 中国东北天气非常 冷。
Zhōngguó Dōngběi tiānqì fēicháng lěng. It’s very cold in Northeast China.
NOTE: 东北 dōngběi as a specific geographical term refers to the northeastern part of China, which used
to be known in the West as Manchuria.
dōngbian 东边 N the east side, to the east, in the east ■ 我们学校的东边是一座公园。Wǒmen xué xiào
de dōngbian shì yí zuò gōngyuán. To the east of our school is a park. ■ 日本在中国的东 边。
Rìbēn zài Zhōngguó de dōngbian. Japan lies to the east of China.
dōngdào 东道 N host 东道国 dōngdàoguó host country / 东道主 dōngdàozhǔ host (usually for an official
function)
dōngfāng 东方 [modif: 东 east + 方 direction, part] N the East, the Orient 东方文化 Dōngfāng wénhuà the

dōngnán 东南 [comp: 东 east + 南 south] N southeast ■ 中国东南地区经济发达,人口很 多。
Zhōngguó dōngnán dìqū jīngjì fādá, rénkǒu hěn duō. The southeastern regions in China are
economically well-developed and densely populated.
dōngxi 东西 N 1 thing, things (个 gè, 件 jiàn, 种 zhǒng) ■ 这些东西都是小明的。Zhèxiē dōngxi dōu
shì Xiǎo Míng de. All these things are Xiao Ming’s. ■ 我没有看到过这种东西。Wǒ méiyǒu
kàndàoguo zhè zhǒng dōngxi. I’ve never seen such a thing. 2 a person or animal (used
affectionately or disapprovingly in colloquial Chinese) ■ 这小 东西真可爱。Zhè xiǎo dōngxi zhēn
kě’ài. What a cute little thing. (referring to a baby or kitten) ■ 你这个坏东西又在骗人了。Nǐ zhè
ge huài dōngxi yòu zài piànrén le. You rascal! You’re trying to deceive me again.
NOTE: 东西 dōngxi, which literally means east and west, is an extremely common “all-purpose” noun that
can denote any object or objects in Chinese. More examples: ■ 妈妈出去买东西了。Māma chūqu mǎi dōngxi le.
Mother’s gone shopping. ■ 图书馆里 不能吃东西。Túshūguǎn lǐ bù néng chī dōngxi. No food in the library. ■ 我
想喝点儿东西。Wǒ xiǎng hē diǎnr dōngxi. I’d like to have a drink.

dōng 冬 N winter
dōngtiān 冬天 [modif: 冬 winter + 天 days] N winter ■ 今年的冬天比去年冷。Jīnnián de dōngtiān bǐ
qùnián lěng. This year’s winter is colder than last year’s. ■ 这一对老人喜欢在暖 和的地方过冬
天。Zhè yí duì lǎorén xǐhuan zài nuǎnhuo de dìfang guò dōngtiān. This old couple likes to spend
winter in a warm region.
dǒng 懂 V comprehend, understand ■ 我不懂你的 意思。Wǒ bù dǒng nǐ de yìsi. I don’t understand
what you mean. ■ 我听得懂一些简单的中文。Wǒ tīng de dǒng yìxiē jiǎndān de Zhōngwén. I can
understand a little simple spoken Chinese. 读懂 dúdǒng read and understand ■ 这本书我读了 两遍
才读懂。Zhè běn shū wǒ dúle liǎng biàn cái dúdǒng. I understood this book only after reading it
twice. / 看懂 kàndǒng see (or read) and understand ■ 这个电影我没有看懂。Zhège diànyǐng wǒ
méiyǒu kàndǒng. I didn’t understand that movie. / 听懂 tīngdǒng listen and understand
dǒngshìzhǎng 董事长 [modif: 董事 in charge + 长 chief] N chairman of the board of directors ■ 大华公
司王董事长在记者招待会上宣布了重 大消息。Dàhuá Gōngsī Wáng dǒngshìzhǎng zài jìzhě
