gù 顾 TRAD 顧 V attend to, care for ■ 你不能只顾 自己,不管别人。Nǐ bù néng zhǐ gù zìjǐ, bù guǎn
biérén. You shouldn’t care for only yourself and nobody else. ■ 他忙得顾不上吃饭。Tā máng de
gù bu shàng chīfàn. He was so busy that he did not have time for meals.
gùkè 顾客 N customer, client (位 wèi) ■ 我们尽 量满足顾客的要求。Wǒmen jìnliàng mǎnzú gùkè de
yāoqiú. We try our best to meet customers’ demands.
gùlǜ 顾虑 V have misgivings, worry 顾虑重重 gùlǜ chóngchóng be filled with misgivings
gùwèn 顾问 N advisor, consultant (位 wèi)
gù 雇 TRAD 僱 V employ, hire

NOTE: 雇佣 gùyòng is   used    when    hiring  low-rank    employees,  e.g.    unskilled   workers.    To  employ  a
professional, the verb to use is 聘用 pìnyòng.

guā 瓜 N melon, gourd (See huángguā 黄瓜, xīguā 西瓜.)
guā 刮 V (of a wind) blow ■ 这儿冬天经常刮西 北风。Zhèr dōngtiān jīngcháng guā xīběi fēng. A
northwestern wind often blows here in winter.
guā fēng 刮风 V (of wind) blows, be windy
guà 挂 TRAD 掛 V hang up ■ 墙上挂着一幅世界地 图。Qiáng shang guàzhe yì fú shìjiè dìtú. A map of
the world hung on the wall.
guàhào 挂号 V register (at a hospital) ■ 在中国看 病的第一件事就是挂号。Zài Zhōngguó kànbìng de
dì-yī jiàn shì jiù shì guàhào. In China, when you go to see a doctor, the first thing to do is to
register. 挂号费 guàhào fèi registration fee, doctor’s consultation fee / 挂号处 guàhào chù registration
office


NOTE:   In  China   if  you are sick,   you go  to  a   hospital    where   doctors work    in  their   specialist  departments,
e.g. internal medicine, gynecology and dermatology. 挂号 guàhào means to tell a receptionist which
department you want to go to and pay the consultation fee. Dentistry is usually one of the departments
and a dentist is generally considered just another doctor.

guāi 乖 ADJ (of children) be good, be well-behaved 乖孩子 guāi háizi a well-behaved child
guǎi 拐 V turn, make a turn ■ 往前走,再向左拐, 就是火车站。Wǎng qián zǒu, zài xiàng zuǒ guǎi,
jiù shì huǒchēzhàn. Walk straight on, then turn left, and you will find the railway station.

guài 怪¹ ADJ strange, odd, queer ■ 我刚才放在这 儿的书怎么一会儿就不见了,真怪!Wǒ gāngcái
fàng zài zhèr de shū zěnme yíhuìr jiù bú jiàn le, zhēn guài! I left a book here just now and it’s
vanished. How odd! ■ 昨天我碰到了怪事。Zuótiān wǒ pèngdàole guài shì. Something strange
happened to me yesterday.
guài 怪² V blame ■ 都怪我,没讲清楚。Dōu guài wǒ, méi jiǎng qīngchu. It was all my fault. I did not
make it clear. ■ 你们别怪来怪去的,看看该 怎么办吧。Nǐmen bié guài-lái-guài-qù de, kànkan
gāi zénme bàn ba. Don’t blame each other. Try to find out what should be done.
guàibudé 怪不得 ADV no wonder, so that’s why
guān 关 TRAD 關 V close; turn off ■ 你离开的时 候,请把灯关掉,把门关上。Nǐ líkài de shíhou, qǐng
bǎ dēng guāndiào, bǎ mén guānshàng. When you leave, please turn off the lights and close the
door. ■ 学校晚上十一点半关大门。Xuéxiào wǎnshang shíyī diǎn bàn guān dàmén. The school
gate is closed at 11:30 p.m. 把电灯/电视机/录音机/机器关掉 bǎ diàndēng/ diànshì jī/lùyīn jī/jīqì guāndiào turn
off the lights/ TV/recorder/machine / 把门/窗关上 bǎ mén/ chuāng guānshang close the door/window
guānbì 关闭 [comp: 关 close + 闭 close] V close down, shut down 关闭机场 guānbì jīchǎng shut down the
airport
