NOTE:   It  is  significant that    the Chinese word    meaning country—国家 guójiā—is    composed    of  the word 国
guó (country) and the word 家 jiā (family). In traditional Chinese thought, China was one big family and
the country was ruled as such, with the emperor as the patriarch.

guò 过¹ TRAD 過 V 1 pass, cross ■ 过马路,一定要小 心。Guò mǎlù, yídìng yào xiǎoxīn. You must be
very careful when crossing the street. 过来 guòlai come over, come across (towards the speaker) ■ 他
正从马路那边过来。Tā zhèng cóng mǎlù nàbian guòlai. He’s coming over from the other side of
the street. ■ 公共汽车开过来了。Gōnggòng qìchē kāi guòlai le. A bus is coming over. 过去 guòqu
go over, go across (away from the speaker) ■ 街上车太多,很难过去。Jiē shang chē tài duō, hěn
nán guòqu. Traffic in the street is too heavy. It’s very difficult to go across. ■ 河水很 急,我游不
过去。Héshuǐ hěn jí, wǒ yóu bù guòqu. The river runs swiftly. I can’t swim across it. 2 spend
(time), live (a life), observe (a festival) ■ 他在国外过了这么多年,生活习惯有些 改变了。Tā
zài guówài guòle zhème duō nián, shēnghuó xíguàn yǒu xiē gǎibiàn le. He has spent so many years
overseas that some of his habits have changed. ■ 从此以后,他们俩过得很幸福。 Cóngcǐ yǐhòu,
tāmen liǎ guò de hěn xìngfú. They lived happily ever after. 过日子 guò rìzi live a life / 过年 guò nián
observe New Year’s Day / 过节 guò jié observe a festival
guòchéng 过程 N process, course ■ 从葡萄变 成酒,是一个又长又复杂的过程。Cóng pútao
biànchéng jiǔ, shì yí ge yòu cháng yòu fùzá de guòchéng. The process by which grapes become
wine is a long and complicated one.

guònián 过年 V observe the (Chinese) New Year’s Day ■ 小孩子最喜欢过年。Xiǎoháizi zuì xǐhuan
guònián. Children are most enthusiastic about celebrating New Year’s Day.
guòqī 过期 [v+obj: 过 pass + 期 period] ADJ invalid after the expiry date, past the sell-by date
guòqù 过去 [comp: 过 pass + 去 gone] N (something) in the past ■ 过去的事,不要多想了。 Guòqù de
shì, bú yào duō xiǎng le. Don’t keep thinking about what’s past. (→ Let bygones be bygones.) ■ 他
过去常常生病,现在身体好多了。 Tā guòqù chángcháng shēngbìng, xiànzài shēntǐ hǎo duō le.
He was often sick in the past. Now he is in much better health.
