She and her husband are divorced.
líkāi 离开 [comp: 离 leave + 开 away from] V depart, leave ■ 他十八岁的时候离开父母,到美国 去
念书。Tā shíbā suì de shíhou líkāi fùmǔ, dào Měiguó qù niànshū. When he was eighteen, he left
his parents and went to America to study. ■ 我离开 一会儿,马上就回来。Wǒ líkāi yíhuìr,
mǎshàng jiù huílai. Excuse me for a minute. I’ll be back soon. 离不开 líbukāi cannot do without ■ 孩
子还小,离 不开妈。Háizi hái xiǎo, líbukāi mā. The child is too young to be without his mother.
lí 梨 N pear (只 zhī) ■ 这梨很甜,你尝尝。Zhè lí hěn tián, nǐ chángchang. This pear is very sweet.

举行一个大会。Lǐtáng li zhèngzài jǔxíng yí ge dàhuì. A rally is being held in the auditorium.
lǐwù 礼物 [modif: 礼 gift + 物 thing] N gift, present (件 jiàn) ■ 这件小小的礼物,请您收下。Zhè jiàn
xiǎoxiǎo de lǐwù, qǐng nín shōuxia. Please accept this small present. ■ 今天是你的生日,我送 你
一件小礼物。Jīntiān shì nǐ de shēngrì, wǒ sòng nǐ yí jiàn xiǎo lǐwù. Today’s your birthday. I’ll
give you a little gift. 结婚礼物 jiéhūn lǐwù wedding present / 生日礼物 shēngrì lǐwù birthday present / 新
年礼物 xīnnián lǐwù New Year present


NOTE:   Chinese modesty requires    that    you belittle    your    present,    describing  it  as 一件小礼物 yí jiàn    xiǎo    lǐwù a
small/insignificant gift. Upon receiving a present, it is bad manners to open it immediately. The
