shàngbian 上边 [modif: 上 top, upper + 边 side] N above, high up (ANTONYM 下边 xiàbian) ■ 从那座 大
楼的上边可以看见飞机场。Cóng nà zuò dàlóu de shàngbian kěyǐ kànjiàn fēijīchǎng. From the
top of that high building, one can see the airport.
shàngdàng 上当 V be fooled, be duped ■ 他太 老实了，容易上当受骗。Tā tài lǎoshí le, róngyì
shàngdàng shòupiàn. He is too straightforward and easily duped. ■ 你怎么又上她的当了？Nǐ
zěnme yòu shàng tā de dàng le? How is it that you got fooled by her again?
shàngjí 上级 [modif: 上 up, above + 级 step, grade] N higher authorities, superior ■ 上级发来 通知，
六月三十日停课。Shàngjí fālai tōngzhī, Liùyuè sānshí rì tíng kè. The authorities have advised
that school be closed on June thirtieth. ■ 你 是我的上级，我当然要完成你分配的任务。Nǐ shì

After supper he usually gets on the Internet for half an hour to read the news. ■ 这几天我忙得 没
有时间上网。Zhè jǐ tiān wǒ máng de méiyǒu shíjiān shàngwǎng. These days I’m so busy that I
haven’t got the time to get on the Internet.
shàngwǎng běn 上网本 N netbook
shàngwǔ 上午 [modif: 上 upper half + 午 noon] N morning (usually from 8 a.m. to noon) (ANTONYM 下午
xiàwǔ) ■ 我们上午上三课。Wǒmen shàngwǔ shàng sān jié kè. We have three classes in the
morning. ■ 他一直睡到第二天上午十点左 右。Tā yìzhí shuìdào dì-èr tiān shàngwǔ shí diǎn
zuǒyòu. He slept until about ten o’clock the next morning.
NOTE: 上午 shàngwǔ does not mean the whole morning. It denotes the part of morning from about eight or
nine o’clock to noon. The period before eight or nine o’clock is 早晨 zǎochén or 早上 zǎoshang.shàngyī 上衣 [modif: 上 upper + 衣 clothing] N upper garment, jacket (件 jiàn) ■ 你这件上衣很好
