儿就会好的。Wǒ shāowēi yǒu diǎnr tóuténg, xiūxi yíhuìr jiù huì hǎo de. I’ve a slight headache.
I’ll be all right after a short rest.
shāo 烧 TRAD 燒 V 1 burn ■ 市政府禁止烧垃 圾。Shìzhèngfǔ jìnzhǐ shāo lājī. The city government bans
the burning of rubbish. 2 cook ■ 今天 我给你们烧个鱼。Jīntiān wǒ gěi nǐmen shāo ge yú. Today
I’ll cook you a fish. 3 have fever ■ 这 孩子烧得厉害,得马上送医院!Zhè háizi shāo de lìhai,
děi mǎshàng sòng yīyuàn! The child is running a very high fever. He must be sent to the hospital
right now!
sháo 勺 N spoon
sháozi 勺子 [suffix: 勺 ladle + 子 nominal suffix] N ladle, spoon (把 bǎ) ■ 她用勺子把汤分给大 家。
Tā yòng sháozi bǎ tāng fēn gei dàjiā. She gave soup to everyone with a ladle.
shǎo 少 I ADJ 1 small amount, few, little (ANTONYM 多 duō) ■ 中国地少人多。Zhōngguó dì shǎo rén duō.
China has little arable land but a large population. 2 not often, seldom ■ 我们虽然在同 一个学
校,但是很少见面。Wǒmen suīrán zài tóng yí ge xuéxiào, dànshì hěn shǎo jiànmiàn. Al- though
we’re in the same school, we seldom see each other. II V be short, be missing ■ 原来我有 一百元,
现在怎么少了二十元?Yuánlái wǒ yǒu yìbǎi yuán, xiànzài zěnme shǎole èrshí yuán? I originally
had one hundred dollars. How is it that I have twenty dollars less now? ■ 要和他们比赛, 我们
还少一个人。Yào hé tāmen bǐsài, wǒmen hái shǎo yí ge rén. We’re still short of one person if we
want to compete with them.
shǎoshù 少数 [modif: 少 few, little + 数 number] N minority (ANTONYM 多数 duōshù) ■ 少数服从多 数,
这是民主的一条基本原则。Shǎoshù fúcóng duōshù, zhè shì mínzhǔ de yì tiáo jīběn yuánzé. The
minority should submit to the majority—this is a fundamental principle of democracy.

shào 少 ADJ young, early youth
shàonián 少年 [modif: 少 young + 年 age] N young man (from around 10 to 16 years old), adolescent ■
自古少年出英雄。Zìgǔ shàonián chū yīngxióng. Ever since ancient times, heroes have emerged
from the young.
NOTES: (1) A young woman of around 10 to 16 years old is called 少女 shàonǚ. (2) The word 青少年
qīngshàonián is often used to mean young people collectively.

shé 蛇 N snake (条 tiáo) ■ 她最怕蛇。Tā zuì pà shé. She finds snakes the most frightening [of all
animals].
