  1. With a small group of your classmates, make a set of guidelines for delivery that is
appropriate to your classroom’s unique culture. For example, would you change the
advice about clothing or accessories presented in this chapter? What might you add
    that is not covered here?

  2. In his book The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life Erving Goffman says the combi-
nation of environment, appearance, and mannerisms forms a “front.”^49 Whether inten-
tional or unwitting, this front influences the way observers define and interpret the
situation. With this in mind, identify some public speakers who effectively live out their
front.^50 Then discuss why some public speakers appear to be something they’re not.
That is, why do they present themselves as competent or trustworthy, and you later
discover they aren’t? What are some ethical implications of fronts?

  3. Create a worksheet that identifies the elements of delivery mentioned in the chapter.
Give it to a classmate just before your speech, and have him or her note nonverbal
aspects of your delivery; afterward, discuss with that person strategies you can use to
    improve problem areas.

  4. Write a script for an ad selling one of these products:
    a. Used car
    b. Perfume
    c. Vacation to South America
    d. Brand of cola
Bring your script to class and exchange it with a classmate. Demonstrate the type of
vocal variation you would use if you were delivering the ad.
