260 CHAPTER 18^ Speaking on Special Occasions
Summary
Special occasion speeches function to integrate the members of the group with one
another and with the community in which they exist. You’ll hear these talks in a variety
of organizations—from clubs and volunteer associations to business, educational, and
religious institutions. You may have numerous opportunities to introduce newcomers or
bid farewell to a person departing your group, to make announcements or nominations,
to present or receive awards, to honor people with tributes, toasts, or eulogies, and to
make other speeches that celebrate special events or that inspire audiences on special
occasions.

- For an excellent example of an awards acceptance speech, read or listen to Martin
Luther King Jr.’s Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech. You can easily find it online.
Jot down at least three “wave” patterns in the speech (see Chapter 9) and list at least
two examples of vivid, interesting language. - Go to YouTube and search for “wedding toast.” (Some speeches there are technically
not toasts because no drink is involved.) Evaluate at least two speeches according to
the following guidelines: it should be (1) relatively short, (2) focused on the couple not
the speaker, and (3) including positive, not embarrassing, details.

or award presentation or acceptance.
