Informative Speech Outline
with Presentation Aids
Music-Thanatology (for use with Chapters 10, 13, and 15)
By Abby Rine
Abby was assigned to do an informative speech with visual aids.
Specific Purpose: To inform my audience about comforting music that is
played to terminally ill patients as they die.
Thesis Statement: Music-thanatology, playing comforting music to dying
patients, differs from music therapy; it is an ancient practice
that is being revived today.
Introduction
[A recording of harp music plays softly throughout the introduction.]
i. during Salvatore Villalobos’s final battle with throat cancer, he became increasingly anxious
until he was offered comfort music through his hospice (Trujillo, 2011).
A. Judith Shotwell, a harpist and music-thanatologist, soothed his final days with music.
B. in order to keep dying patients comfortable and give them peace, many hospitals and
hospices now provide a similar service.

  1. According to Music-Thanatology Association international (MTAi, 2011),
music-thanatology is the prescriptive use of music—harp and voice—to help
aid mental, physical, and spiritual symptoms of the dying.

  2. The word comes from the Greek word thanatos, which means “death.”

  3. The music is live so the musician can tune in to the patient’s and family’s
    specific needs.
ii. death is inevitable, but no one wants pain and suffering.
iii. i first heard about music-thanatology as a news item; my curiosity was piqued, and
i wanted to know more about the technique.
iV. i will explain the difference between music-thanatology and music therapy; then
i’ll give a brief history of the practice and show how it is currently being revived.

Body
i. Music-thanatology (MTAi, 2011) differs from music therapy according to the American
Music Therapy Association website (2011).
[A PowerPoint list has two columns comparing therapy to thanatology.]
A. Music therapy is designed to be life-supporting, but music-thanatology aims to help
people “unbind” and move toward the completion of life.
B. Music therapists engage people actively, often using words; music-thanatologists
typically eliminate words.
