Come Watch Lacrosse (for use with Chapters 16 and 17)
By Andrés Lucero
Andrés was assigned to make one claim and support it by giving three criteria and showing how
lacrosse meets those criteria.
Have you ever sat and watched a long, boring baseball game? You all know the deal: ball
... strike... ball... strike... ten minutes later, a popup. Well, if you’ve endured such
“entertainment” and agree that there might be more exciting things to do with your
time, you should try watching a sport created by Native Americans—one that is fast and
exciting, hard hitting, and very strategic. A sport like lacrosse. As you may know, I play
lacrosse for the university. Today, I will explain why you should watch a lacrosse game.
Lacrosse is fast and exciting. In fact, it is called the fastest sport in the world because
the clock runs constantly and stops only for a few seconds when the ball goes out of
bounds. Unlike baseball or football, players never have time to rest. For that reason,
there are many substitutions during the game. Since there is always action on the field,
there is never a boring moment. Watching lacrosse is similar to watching a long rally in
a tennis match, yet the game itself is as hard hitting as football.
A second reason to watch lacrosse is because it is a very physical game. Since it is a con-
tact sport, not surprisingly, there is lots of rough contact. If I am not careful, I can be seri-
ously injured. I know this from experience. In my first month of college play, I had a painful
introduction to Division I lacrosse. On too many occasions, I found myself lying flat on my
back, with nothing but sky in view. I discovered that there are many lacrosse players who set
up a kill and look to just cream a guy. However, a player does not have to be roughed up.
Some players—myself included—try to use strategy to outsmart the opponent.
And this is a third reason you should watch a lacrosse match. Good players and
good teams do not just go out and run around the field; they plan what they will do and
then they execute their plan. When you watch a game, you can see how the entire team
works together to make goals. Most of the finesse teams, those who concentrate on
strategy, win more often than those who look for ways to injure their opponents.
In conclusion, you now have three good reasons to watch a lacrosse game: it is a
fast, hard-hitting sport that requires much strategy to win. So the next time you find
yourself in front of the TV watching a ball... then a strike... then a ball... then ten
minutes later, a popup, get up and go watch a lacrosse game—experience it firsthand.
Needed: A Grief Support System on Campus
(for use with Chapters 16 and 17)
By Carrie Weichbrodt
Carrie’s assignment was to give a persuasive speech about a campus problem that needed a
solution. Her goal is to convince her audience of a need; she is not formulating a policy.
