- With a small group in your classroom, discuss ways that people who hold diverse per-
spectives on a controversial topic might engage in dialogue (for example, pro-choice
advocates meeting with pro-life activists; born-again Christians talking with committed
Muslims; animal rights activists meeting with research scientists; leaders of NATO
meeting with leaders of the African Union). How can each group listen to the other and
explore its perspectives with an open mind? - Form small groups and choose a controversial issue about which you have moderate
to strong disagreement. Discuss the topic within the group, and put into practice the
principles for speaking and listening in this chapter. - Look up your campus’s guidelines regarding academic honesty. What information do
they provide to help students learn and practice ethical research procedures? What are
the penalties for plagiarism? - Look up your campus library’s information on source citation. What resources are
available to help you format your reference list in the style your instructor prefers?
