  1. With a small group in your classroom, discuss ways that people who hold diverse per-
    spectives on a controversial topic might engage in dialogue (for example, pro-choice
    advocates meeting with pro-life activists; born-again Christians talking with committed
    Muslims; animal rights activists meeting with research scientists; leaders of NATO
    meeting with leaders of the African Union). How can each group listen to the other and
    explore its perspectives with an open mind?

  2. Form small groups and choose a controversial issue about which you have moderate
    to strong disagreement. Discuss the topic within the group, and put into practice the
    principles for speaking and listening in this chapter.

  3. Look up your campus’s guidelines regarding academic honesty. What information do
    they provide to help students learn and practice ethical research procedures? What are
    the penalties for plagiarism?

  4. Look up your campus library’s information on source citation. What resources are
    available to help you format your reference list in the style your instructor prefers?
