A short, simple answer to the above question: no. Yes you will
need some IT skills, that much goes without saying. Knowledge
of how to install an operating system and any third-party
software is certainly advantageous. However, you needn’t be a
computing guru to set up a DIY cloud service; it’s not
something that will take up too much time either. Within an
hour, you can be up and running and hosting your own cloud.
We’ll look at how you can set one up over the next four pages,
utilising both existing hardware and a brief shopping list of
components should you not have anything to hand. Essentially,
you can set up a DIY cloud with a standard computer, or if
you’re interested in stretching your project skills, you can use a
Raspberry Pi. We won’t go into RPi detail here but it’s certainly
worth considering for a future endeavour.

A DIY cloud needn’t be an ultra-powerful spec PC. Cobble your left-over hardware
together and see what you can make.
It’s all fine and well talking about the benefits of a DIY cloud setup but in real world terms is it a mammoth project
that requires intricate IT skill levels?
