.4 demonstrate efficient use of setting to ensure conformance with
operational procedures, including;
.1 alarm parameters for anti-grounding
.2 proximity to hazards and special areas
.3 availability of chart data
.4 chart update status
.5 back up arrangements
.6 integrity monitoring
.7 verification of proper functioning

.5 adjust settings and values to suit the present conditions;

.6 demonstrate situational awareness while using ECDIS including;
.1 safe water and proximity of hazards
.2 set and drift
.3 chart data and scale selection
.4 suitability of route
.5 target detection and management
.6 integrity of sensors
.7 man overboard function/event triggering.


  1. Demonstrate and explain the correct action to take in the case of an ECDIS
    malfunction.

  2. Demonstrate the use of ECDIS playback functionality for passage review,
    route planning and review of system functions.

  3. Acknowledge and manage alarms critical to navigation.


The exercises should include management of operational procedures, systems files
and data, including:


i) management of procurement, licensing and updating of chart data
system software to conform to established procedures;
ii) system and information updating, including the ability to update
ECDIS system version in accordance with vendors product
development;
iii) creating and maintaining system configuration and backup files;
iv) creating and maintaining log files in accordance with established
procedures;
v) creating and maintaining route plan files in accordance with
established procedures;
vi) using ECDIS log book and track history functions for inspection of
system functions, alarm settings and user responses.
