The candidate can use ECDIS as an integral part of effective bridge resource
management, in open and confined waters, in planning and conducting a passage, in
responding to navigational emergencies, and in manoeuvring the ship and
maintaining a safe navigational watch.
Performance criteria
- Apply the standards regarding watchkeeping as laid down in Chapter VIII of
the STCW Code during simulator exercises.
- Interpret and analyse information from ECDIS and other interface equipment,
taking into account the limitations of the equipment and prevailing
circumstances and conditions.
- Plan a passage and maintain the planned track within stated limits and make
amendments to course and/or speed to maintain safety of navigation.
- Explain the need to carry out performance checks and tests of ECDIS
equipment.
- Carry out performance checks and tests to ECDIS systems in compliance
with manufacturers’ recommendations and good navigational practice.
- Demonstrate appropriate initial responses to navigational emergencies and/or
malfunction of ECDIS and its impact on related critical equipment.
- Apply the principles of bridge resource management including:
.1 allocation, assignment and prioritisation of resources;
.2 effective communication;
.3 obtaining and maintaining situational awareness.
- Acknowledge and manage alarms critical to navigation.
NB – the term ‘bridge resource management’ in this outcome and specifically in point
7, above, refers to the management of bridge equipment only.
