Outcome 2

The candidate can use ECDIS as an integral part of effective bridge resource
management, in open and confined waters, in planning and conducting a passage, in
responding to navigational emergencies, and in manoeuvring the ship and
maintaining a safe navigational watch.

Performance criteria


  1. Apply the standards regarding watchkeeping as laid down in Chapter VIII of
    the STCW Code during simulator exercises.

  2. Interpret and analyse information from ECDIS and other interface equipment,
    taking into account the limitations of the equipment and prevailing
    circumstances and conditions.

  3. Plan a passage and maintain the planned track within stated limits and make
    amendments to course and/or speed to maintain safety of navigation.

  4. Explain the need to carry out performance checks and tests of ECDIS
    equipment.

  5. Carry out performance checks and tests to ECDIS systems in compliance
    with manufacturers’ recommendations and good navigational practice.

  6. Demonstrate appropriate initial responses to navigational emergencies and/or
    malfunction of ECDIS and its impact on related critical equipment.

  7. Apply the principles of bridge resource management including:


.1 allocation, assignment and prioritisation of resources;
.2 effective communication;
.3 obtaining and maintaining situational awareness.


  1. Acknowledge and manage alarms critical to navigation.


NB – the term ‘bridge resource management’ in this outcome and specifically in point
7, above, refers to the management of bridge equipment only.
