ECDIS training course requirements


Aims The aims of the training are to equip the
candidate with the fundamental knowledge and
skills needed to keep a safe navigational watch
using electronic chart display and information
systems (ECDIS), interfaced with other onboard
equipment to maintain safety of navigation.


Intended for Candidates requiring a stand-alone ECDIS
certificate in accordance with Regulation II/1 of
the STCW Convention, 1978, as amended
(Manila Amendments).


Objective The intended outcomes of this training are
contained in Annex C. On completion the
candidate will have demonstrated competence
to:



  • use ECDIS to maintain a safe navigation
    watch as a part of effective bridge
    resource management.


This objective is reflected in:


i Table A-II/1 of the STCW Code;

ii the marine national occupational
standards B02 ‘Maintain a navigational
watch’ and B11 ‘Initiate the response to
navigation emergencies’.

Entry requirements The minimum expected entry requirements are
for candidates holding OOW certificate of
competency and is intended for those who are
required to hold an ECDIS certificate.


Training plan The training should be provided as a full time
block course of at least 40 hours duration – i.e.
40 hours contact time.


Definition of a training day A training day has been defined, in agreement
with the MCA, as one which cannot be in
excess of 10 hours, including relevant breaks,
and with no more than 8 contact hours.


Conduct of the training Practical training is essential. It enables the
candidate to acquire and demonstrate
competence in the operation of ECDIS. A full
appreciation of the inter-relationship and safe
use of all methods of navigation must be the
keynote throughout the training.
