A great one-horned rhinoceros
cools off in its pond at Berlin’s
Zoologischer Garten Zoo on June 5,
as temperatures climbed past the
30 degree Celsius (86 Farenheit)
mark. These endangered animals—
they are only about 2,500 of them
left in the world—are hunted illegally
for their horns, which are believed
(wrongly) to have medicinal powers.
A mature great one-horned rhino
can weigh as much as 6,000 pounds.
