THE UNIVERSE
Young galaxy survey.
Embedded in this Hubble
Space Telescope image of
nearby and distant galaxies
are 18 young galaxies or
galactic building blocks,
each containing dust, gas
and a few thousand million
stars. Each of the objects
is 11,000 million light-years
from Earth and much smaller
than today’s galaxies. This
picture is a true-colour
image made from separate
exposures taken in blue,
green and infra-red light
with the Wide Field Planetary
Camera 2. It required 48
orbits around the Earth to
make the observations. The
green and red exposures
were taken in June 1994;
the blue exposures, as well
as 15 orbits of the redshifted
hydrogen line, were taken
in June 1995.
