Bronze Helmet Dedicated At Olympia By Miltiades in the early fifth century B.C. The dedicator's name appears incised along the lower rim- 'Miltiades dedicated to Zeus'. It is difficult not to identify this
Miltiades as the victor of Marathon. It was customary to dedicate spoils of the defeated (there is a Persian helmet dedicated at Olympia by the Athenians) so this is perhaps not from Marathon, but from some
other encounter, with Greeks.
The Plain At Marathon. In the decisive battle in 490 B.C., in which the Athenians repelled the Persian invasion, the Greeks formed up in the foothills and the flow of the battle was, in this picture, from left to
right. The tumulus covering the Athenian dead appears at the centre. This fertile coastal plain is typical of the shore line of central Greece.
