Authors
Texts and translations of most of the works mentioned are available in the Loeb Classical Library
(LCL). This, like the bilingual French Bude series, is of varying quality, but is particularly useful for late
Greek authors, and contains some recent editions of great value, e.g. Seneca the Elder (M.
Wmterbottom), Pliny's Letters (B. Radice), Herodian (C. R. Whittaker). Authors not available in Loeb
are asterisked in the following list. When an author is not mentioned, it may be assumed (i) that there is
a Loeb; (ii) that there is no outstanding special study in English.
- Aristides: A. Boulanger, Aelius Aristide (Paris, 1923). Good discussions of the 'diary' of his illnesses
in E. R. Dodds, Pagan and Christian in an Age of Anxiety (Cambridge, 1965); and in A. J. Festugiere,
Personal Religion among the Greeks (Berkeley and Los Angeles, 1954), LCL has a selection only; the
most recent translation of the 'diary' is C. A. Behr, Aelius Aristides and The Sacred Tales (Amsterdam,
1968), which also contains a discussion of Aristides' career. A complete translation of Aristides by C. A.
Behr is now available (Amsterdam, 1981). Arrian: P. A. Stadter, Arrian of Nicomedeia (Chapel Hill,
1980).
M. Aurelius: Good study by A. S. L. Farquharson, whose text, translation, and commentary are standard:

Demetrius: Tr. G. M. A. Grube, A Greek Critic (Toronto, 1961). Also (part) by D. C. Innes in Ancient

critical texts of the period (e.g. 'Longinus', Tacitus, extracts from Dionysius and Plutarch) may be found.

- Greek novelists: A collected volume of translations (ed. B. P. Reardon) is promised. Meanwhile,
Xenophon of Ephesus, Chanton, and Heliodorus are not in LCL, but Bude has a good edn. of the last.
General study: B. E. Perry, The Ancient Romances (Berkeley, 1967); but E. Rohde, Der griechtsche
Roman Leipzig, 1876 3rd. edn. 1914) remains a classic. See also G. Anderson, Eros Sophtstes
