Anniversary 1999-2009

The University Sports Centre programmes are intended for all
students at the University. On the other hand, regular sports
courses are offered by individual faculties at the University
as well. Through its programs, the University Sports Centre
provides students recreational training and the opportunity
to improve their sport skills under the guidance of top physi-
cal educators. Their primary mission is to provide conditions
for development of sports activities for students at the Uni-
versity, and particularly those segments of sports activities
that allow the widest possible involvement of students. The
University Sports Centre also, along with the Sports Associa-
tion of the University of Ljubljana, plays an important role
in creating better conditions for student athletes in the in-
ternational arena.

herishing student sport at the University of Ljubljana re-
sulted in obtaining the prestigious EUSA award of the
best university according to the sports achievements in the
period 1999-2009 and also in the year 2009. The titles re-
flected the efforts and participation of university teams and
individual students of the University of Ljubljana. Within the
10-year period, University of Ljubljana participated in 34 Eu-
ropean Universities Championships, organised one European
Universities Championship (Handball 2009), and its students
won 30 medals.

University of Ljubljana is an institution with a very rich tra-
dition. It was established in 1919 on the foundations of a
long-established pedagogical tradition and is the central and
largest educational institution in Slovenia. It is a large univer-
sity, with 50,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students,
offering over 300 different undergraduate and postgraduate
study programmes. It employs approximately 6,000 higher
education teachers, researchers, assistants and administrative
staff in 23 faculties and 3 arts academies.
The University of Ljubljana is renowned for its quality social
and natural sciences and technical study programmes, struc-
tured in accordance with the Bologna Declaration. Univer-
sity’s projects keep pace with the latest developments in the
area of arts, sciences and technology at home and abroad.
The University of Ljubljana is listed amongst the top 500
universities in the world according to the ARWU Shanghai,
Times THES-QS and Webometrics rankings.
The University of Ljubljana offers all students a diverse selec-
tion of sports programs, both in annual and winter semester.
Sport at the University of Ljubljana is organised as a supple-
mentary activity, conducted by the University Sports Centre.
