EUROPEAN UNIVERSITY SPORTS ASSOCIATION Celebrating the 10

th
Anniversary 1999-2009

T

he University Sports Association of Poland (AZS) was
awarded as the most active National University Sports
Association during the last 10 years in terms of participation
and organisation of the EUSA Events. Since the European
Universities Championships were first introduced by EUSA,
athletes and AZS teams from many Polish universities have
continually participated in them; being one of the most suc-
cessful ones. With lots of satisfaction they have also organ-
ized many such competitions all across Poland.
The federation is one of the EUSA founding members. Dur-
ing the last ten years it organised 11 European Universities
Championships, one EUSA General Assembly and Executive
Committee Meeting. With over 70 European Universities
Championships organised by the end of 2009, Poland was
present on 58 editions and Polish university teams won over
120 medals altogether.

In 2009, University Sports Association of Poland (AZS) cel-
ebrated its 100th Anniversary. The federation was, from the
very beginning, very successful as a part of international uni-
versity movement. The First World University Summer Sports
Championship was held in Warsaw in 1924. It eventually be-
came Universiade in 1959 and is taking place under the FISU
auspices regularly to this day.
AZS takes pride in making major contributions to the devel-
opment of Polish sports. These contributions should not be
measured only by the amount of medals won in Olympics,
World and European Championships, Universiades, World
and European Universities Championships or records set dur-
ing these events.
