1999-2009 EUROPEAN UNIVERSITY SPORTS ASSOCIATION Celebrating the 10

th
Anniversary

Currently, AZS is the biggest association working in academic
society in Poland, with a total of 55,000 members registered
in 325 university clubs and intercollegiate system. For them,
AZS has been organizing university championships for over
50 years. Only last year, 260 universities and colleges en-
tered in such championships and competed in 42 different
sports disciplines. Members of AZS also participate in an in-
ternational ISIC program, which is manifested by a common
identity card.
AZS is supported by Polish state and local authorities. The
organization also gathers necessary assets from membership
fees and business activity. All of these are used in implemen-
tation of statutory objectives.

Since the early 1990s AZS has been actively involved in build-
ing European structures of university sports. First it was done
with close cooperation with partners from Germany, Belarus
and Ukraine through joint organization of international stu-
dents meetings and later in the framework of EUSA activities,
an organization of which Poland was one of the founders.
Taking into account 100 fruitful years of AZS history, it
must be said that its aims have remained the same. The most
important aims are still promoting physical activity among
students, creating necessary conditions for talented students
to develop their skills in sports, encouraging students to be
responsible for a club, university and association and pro-
moting sports as a good opportunity for youth integration.
